Oxford College of Equine Physical Therapy has for some time now been offering an educational programme in the manipulative treatment of animals, primarily horses. The course is managed and run by both registered and retired chiropractors, with substantial input from a veterinarian and other suitably qualified ancillary staff.

The course has its origins in post graduate chiropractic education, although recent legislative developments have necessitated changes to qualifications awarded.

Within the UK, the (statutorily regulated) practice of chiropractic includes the evaluation of the health status of the patient, the formulation of a working diagnosis and (where appropriate) referral to another health professional. However, under the provisions of Section 27 of the Veterinary Surgeons Act it would be illegal for a chiropractor to perform these functions in respect of an animal, and the title 'Animal Chiropractor' is thus deemed to be unacceptable. Graduates of the OCEPT programme are thus awarded a Diploma that bestows the title 'Animal Manipulator'.

The OCEPT programme is presented throughout with due reference to the Veterinary Surgeons Act, which dictates that the treatment of animals can only be administered with veterinary approval.
